IBM’s Software Division Announces Global Return-to-Work Policy

IBM’s software division is joining other tech companies in implementing a return-to-office mandate. Starting today, employees in the division will be required to be in the office for a minimum of three days a week. Unlike similar mandates from Amazon, Google, Meta, and Zoom, IBM’s requirement will affect employees worldwide, rather than just those based in the US.

The decision, as stated in an internal blog written by IBM Software’s senior vice presidents Kareem Yusuf and Dinesh Nirmal, will allow individual project teams and managers to determine which three days employees will be in the office. The mandate initially applies to employees who live within 50 miles of an IBM office, with those living farther exempt for now.

While IBM has not provided additional details on when employees living farther than 50 miles will be required to return to the office, it is crucial for the company’s culture and goals for employees to spend more meaningful time together in person, as mentioned in the blog.

In addition to the return-to-work policy, IBM has previously announced plans to use AI to replace jobs. CEO Arvind Krishna stated in an interview with Bloomberg that the company intends to replace nearly 8,000 jobs with AI, focusing on roles that could be automated. This aligns with IBM’s effort to cut down on hiring for back-office positions that can be replaced by AI.

Overall, IBM’s software division is making changes to both its work policies and job structure, reflecting the ever-evolving nature of the tech industry.
